Casella’s
third symphony, Sinfonia per orchestra, was a triumphant success at its world
premiere in Chicago under Frederick Stock, as it
was in subsequent performances in Rome, Vienna and Dresden.
And no wonder; its life-affirming exuberance, its sunny, scarcely clouded
character, the brightness of its lovely sonorities when the wind instruments
predominate, its buoyant tempi, its wealth of melodies, its formal clarity, not
to mention the finer facets of the score, with its rapidly alternating, widely
differing sections – the music could not help but cheer and refresh the
audiences, weary of the turmoil of war.
