Description
Memes charts an overall trajectory from undifferentiated, vertical material to
discreet, linear structures. This evolution takes place within five sections. The
piece opens with a pulsating 9-note tertian polychord that will serve as a generator
of much of the subsequent pitch material. The section ends with a secondary,
harmonic idea, an alternating two-chord 6-note cadencial formula. The second
part consists of a static, motionless octad interrupted by short, non-hamonic
points in the outer registers. Unison rhythms propel the third part to climactic
jazzy scalar passages. A senza misura section follows, featuring imitative repeated
scale segments (in the style of Lutoslawski). The ending combines ascending scales
with the cadential idea along with the opening polychord.
Memes was written in 1983 for Wesley Reist and the University of Nebraska Clarinet
Ensemble, and slightly revised in 2002.
