Description
In June 2019, I will be commissioned by the Lyon Metropole Orchestra to write a free work for wind band. The duration was to be between 15 and 20 minutes. From the outset, the question of form arose in direct relation to duration and I saw the opportunity to realise an idea that had been in my head for a long time: to write a work in which bel canto, jazz, atonal music or a choral song could be mixed.
Naturally, the trap to avoid was to make a patchwork of music and to do this I had to keep a coherent and common musical material throughout the piece. But it was also necessary to explain the reasons for this original (even strange) choice. That's when the literary pretext appeared to me; how to justify so many styles in the same work? The life story of a man was the ideal pretext. This is why it is necessary to read the text I wrote as a preamble, which gives the argument of Carnets de voyage(s).
