Description
Cerha always writes insightful introductory texts to his
compositions; in his remarks on the 9 Bagatellen, he talks about the
allure of musical thinking for three strings: “It stimulates the approach to
three equal individuals and, even more than the string quartet, obliges the
composer to consider togetherness and separateness of the polyphonic, coherent
events; there is far less room for a hierarchy of the parts.”
It is fascinating for the listener to attend the composer’s mastery as
he creates nine short movements of differing character where fervent melody and
deeply felt melancholy have a very important place; even in the several,
virtuosic fast movements there is a short, lyrical section. The seventh
movement could and should become a popular encore – birds twitter and peep
enchantingly, as if in a fairy-tale forest.
