Description
Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra (2016) is the third in a trilogy of concerti by James Ricci (His companion concertos for piano and violin are also published by Universal Edition). The cello soloist begins this work with a very tonal, chant-like introduction played in double-stops that set the mood and defines the language of the piece. The slow intro (quarter = 60) builds gradually as other solo instruments and instrumental groups enter to echo, comment on, and converse in counterpoint with the primary music of the cellist. This leads to a fast first movement (quarter = 120) where the music becomes rather virtuosic and tense. A slow, calm second movement (quarter = 60) is reminiscent of the opening, but evolves as a more introspective and interactive dialogue between soloist and chamber orchestra. Two expressive solo cello cadenzas are integrated into this movement. The third movement is rather quick (quarter = 108) and incorporates some unexpected alternating meter. A 16th-note motor-pattern binds the solo cello main idea together with the ensemble throughout this intense, dramatic, and climatic movement. All three movements and the Intro are to be played without pause. The concerto is approximately 14 minutes in duration.
This work is intended for musicians experienced in performing complex contemporary music. The chamber orchestra string section can be performed with one player per part, but larger string forces are recommended. Percussion I instruments: Bell Tree, Bass Drum (B.D.), Side Drum (S.D.), Tom-toms (3), Snare Drum, Bongos (2), Tam-tam, Cymbals (Medium, Small, and "Trash/Crash"), Tambourine, and Crotales (6) (C, D, E, F#, G, A). Percussion II instruments: Vibraphone and Marimba.
