Description
Diaphragmatic Breathing: breathe deeply through the nose
then exhale slowly through the mouth.
Vitalic Breathing: inhale through the nose in a series short
sniffs then exhale through the mouth with an explosive “haaa".
Dynamic Cleansing Breathing: purse lips and inhale through
the mouth then exhale through the mouth with lips nearly
closed creating an air sound. All other notated breathing should
be through the trombone as loudly as possible..
program notes
The region above 25,000 feet on mountains found mostly in
Central Asia is referred to as the Death Zone. At such extreme
heights, besides hypoxia, hypothermia and frostbite, the
trombonist must contend with the lethal effects of HAPE
(High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) when the arteries leak fluid
into the lungs, and HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema)
when fluid leaks from the oxygen-starved blood vessels causing
severe swelling of the brain. As the effects of HAPE and HACE
intensify, motor and mental skills deteriorate with alarming
speed with a quick descent to a lower altitude the only remedy
for survival.
While in the Death Zone, trombone playing should be limited
to no more than six minutes.
