The imposing physicality of two grand pianos fused along their sides into one, solid mass provides the aural and emotional context for this piece. Like two tectonic plates pushed together they begin the piece as a singular musical object made up of two distinct halves. As the piece progresses the music gradually pushes outwards from the centre; the “plates” drift and we become more and more aware of the sound being pushed to either side of the space. The pre-recorded element of the piece is entirely made up of earth sounds recorded by seismometers and hydrophones.
As suggested by the title, the piece for me metaphorically represents something fundamental about our human relationships; fused as a single entity but made up of separate halves; the desire to merge and emerge; the constant forming and reforming of fault lines between us.
