Description
At the center of my Die Fähre stands a short story by the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann bearing the same name. Not yet set to music, this text is also her first publication. It appeared as early as 1946 in the 'Kärntner Illustrierte'. The author, who was 20 years old at the time, writes about Josip, a young ferryman who waits for passengers on the bank of a river during a hot summer's day. He can hardly wait for one of them: Maria.
Many times, he has taken Maria across the river already, to the house of the mysterious figure only referred to as the “Herr”. In the boredom of this summer afternoon, bitter jealousy rises in him. When Maria finally comes in the evening and asks for passage, he cannot contain his temper....
In my composition I try to capture and intensify the complex emotional world of the protagonist, the landscape and atmosphere. The text is performed in the tradition of Sprechstimme half spoken; half sung. The music envelops the voice, underlines and intensifies emotions, anticipates them, establishes connections. The plot is thereby woven into the musical structure. Starting from a quiet beginning, the music intensifies more and more, the mood changes happen faster and faster. In the final passage, however, the flow of the music becomes calmer again, hinting at Josip's lingering hopes.
