Description
Fantasias and Capriccios have had a long distinguished career in the cannon of western art music. I cannot help but be drawn to an artistic or a potentially aesthetically pleasing idea that contains the words Fantasia and Capriccio in its title. These two terms translate to “fantasy” and “whim.” These words both inspire and evoke in me my creative character and my tunesmith aptitude. I try to practice enjoyment and respite when I write music, like this, designed to be full of musical fantasy and impulse.
And, for a composer, what more merrymaking can there be than to write a piece scored for multiple woodwinds bent on being a festival of ornate whimsy. What an opportunity! There are so many timbres to be mixed and blended together in unlimited ways. It is my opportunity to become rich with musical ideas. Needless to say it was my great pleasure to compose this piece “Fantasia and Capriccio For Nine Winds.” From start to finish it never stops smiling and never lets up. It is a lively, continuous and uninterrupted exercise in “perpetuum mobile” or perpetual motion. Enjoy.
