Description
Gathering (2021) plays on the many different meanings of the noun and the verb, gathering: the gathering of momentum in an object; the gathering of information; to understand; the social gathering. The ideas for this string quartet occurred to me early in 2021. Ironically, it is well known that social gatherings were strictly prohibited at the time. However, I decided to write about social ‘gathering’ using a combination of imagination and memory of real events, as well as the more scientific and theoretical interpretations.
In the single movement string quartet, the harmony gradually becomes more explicit. Complex textures become more prevalent, with fugato build up sections and increasingly intense dialogues leading towards brighter presentations of older themes. The modality – often ambiguous – becomes more clearer defined. The music tends to gather speed, and more importantly, resilience against loss of speed – more substantial fast sections with more obvious propulsion towards a conclusion – or, as I see it, momentum.
