Description
Having a “chat” can mean anything from having a good conversation to talking nonsense or being at a noisy place where you cannot properly hear what the persons sitting next to you ae saying. In later years we also have been familiar with online chats and chatrooms on computers.
Musical instruments in an ensemble also participate in conversations. They “chat” with each other, repeating or developing small musical ideas and phrases.
From early childhood on I remember woodwind-instruments bringing sound and life to TV cartoons, a busy bassoon, a nervous flute, or a funny clarinet.
In the three chapters of “Chat Café for Wind Quintet” 1 “Chat Cats”, 2 “Chatmosphere”, and 3 “Chattitude”, I was inspired by my memory of the small sense and nonsense instruments chats and I also enjoy playing with repetitions, where a little motif or phrase is echoed among the five instruments in the “Chat Café.”
