Description
Invención is the second piece in which González uses a writing procedure that he call complex writing by which different duration structures are overlapping with each other as different layers. The result is a sort of virtual polyphonic sonorous signal emanating from a single stave. Also the duration structures can be dilated or interrupted by other structures with different duration factors. A quintuplet of double-crotches structure can be interrupted after the third note with a normal quaver for example, then the next structure can be a sextuplet structure where only the first two notes are played then, the last two double-quavers of the quintuplet structure appear completing that quintuplet structure, then, the last five notes of the sextuplet structure are played concluding the sextuplet structure.
One of the particularities of the piece is that the vibraphonist can choose a different path (stave) for each execution.
Arrows are used to indicate the number of possible paths to take.
Some sections has several staves, so, a multiple section. On that sections, the player have to decide which path-stave to play. Jumping to another path-stave is not allowed.
Nevertheless, in a multiple section arrows are putted to allow the player to jump to another path-stave in a vertical way.
Concerning the assembly of all the passages of the part, this must be carried out in a continuous and fluid manner, without giving rise to any fissures (unless otherwise indicated), as if the entire work were written on a single staff, according to the common custom of writing for the vibraphone.
Invención was premiered in 1996 in Germany by percussionist Markus Schmidt. The audio version presented here is a live recording of that premiere.
