Description
Piccolo Concerto by Levente Gyöngyösi was commissioned by Peter Verhoyen, solo piccoloist of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and composed in 2022.
The work actually follows the usual concerto division, i.e. a three-movement fast-slow-fast structure, but the composer has added a short introductory movement before the opening movement, which is the main focus of the work. The work is thus extended to four movements. This opening movement, with its Hungarian folk music atmosphere, gives the listener the feeling of hearing the ancient Hungarian shepherd's instrument, the tilinko. This introductory music flows seamlessly into the large first movement and then returns later at a certain important dramaturgical point in the first movement.
The third movement can be called chamber music, as there are only three instruments playing alongside the soloist: flute, harp and solo violin.
Finally, the work ends with a baroque sonata-like movement in two parts, in which it is not difficult to recognise the Hungarian folk song "Arra vigyázz, öregasszony, hogy az ördög el ne kapjon" (Beware, old woman, lest the devil catch you) in the main theme. The composer has such an affectionate relationship with this folk song that he once used it in another work in 2008.
