Der unbekannte, von ihm unbeeinflussbare Termin der Aufführung (das Werk war von Radio Genf in Auftrag gegeben worden, um am Tag des Waffenstillstandes, zur Feier des Friedens, uraufgeführt zu werden) hatte vom Komponisten höchste Konzentration verlangt und ihn zur Überzeugung geführt, dass der Bedeutung des Anlasses nur ein Werk religiösen Charakters Genüge tun könne. Die Uraufführung fand wie geplant am Tag des Waffenstillstandes, dem 7. Mai 1945, statt.
