Description
Marguerite Yourcenar wrote this poem as an hommage to her lover Grace Frick who died in 1979. The poem tells about the soul of her late partner being present into Yourcenar's mind, in every place, in the landscape, in every moment of her life.
here the translation of the poem:
You'll never know that your soul travels
Like in my heart a sweet adopted heart
And that nothing, neither time, other loves, nor age
Will never prevent you from being;
That the beauty of the world has taken your face,
Lives on your softness, glows with your clarity,
And that the pensive lake at the bottom of the landscape
Just tell me again your serenity.
You will never know that I take away your soul.
Like a golden lamp that illuminates me as I walk;
That a little of your voice has passed into my song.
Sweet torch, your rays, sweet brazier, your flame.
Teach me about the paths you have taken,
And you live a little since I survive you.
