Description
The "Six Songs on Poems by K. D. Szatrawski" for soprano and orchestra was commissioned by the Warmian-Masurian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olsztyn, Poland. The piece is the result of the composer's cooperation with the poet. Four texts chosen from the poetry books are coming from different periods of the writer’s artistic work. Others ("Dream", and "When Time Ends") have been written especially for this musical piece.
It can be sung in Polish or English.
Music in the song cycle doesn’t illustrate the poems but it’s interpreting them, coming with more meanings from between the words. The main idea of time (since music is the art of organizing time) determined the specific selection, setting, and order of the songs. There is a good time in them, and a good time in between (an evolving perspective).
Music in "BEFORE DAWN" is kept in a mood of the night dream between the state of consciousness and unconsciousness. It’s not only the loneliness of an abandoned person after getting apart from love but also this kind of existential solitude, which is the natural state of every human being. We can hear a lot of warm piano and harps passages that together with winds and strings may wake us up and sue down back to sleep. The vocal part is very lyrical.
"CHERRY" is full energy, waking up to life through singing, and getting motivated "to spit up a rock!" energetically winning another day, although life is not bringing only good things. Fast, colorful, contrasting music accompanied by a lot of percussions (maracas, timpani, triangle, tambourine, piano) and many woodwind instruments (from piccolo down to bassoons). The voice act as a strong heroine, sometimes velvety, sometimes predatory.
"THE LETTER" is a word game song that musically plays with the senses. Music treats everyday situations as sometimes silly and irritating while easily absurd. A cheerful attitude can help us set apart from everyday problems that in the end turn out quite small. The singer is playing with her voice similar to a child with a ping-pong ball, engaged with its beauty, not with the competition result. Even if curious about the postman's fate, who (like a drop) "under the umbrella dropped".
“WHEN TIME ENDS” is a song about the charms of being together. Beauty hides in the routine of everyday life when small things can make you happy. In music, we can hear the sound of a glockenspiel, which as a holiday music box brings a spirit of the caring family. Here a drop is a metaphor for heavenly perfection at the moment. When every moment is the right moment.
"DREAM" is a musical visualization of the idea of catching running clouds that evoke thoughts about our desires. It's the type of dream that occurs when you're awake but just imagining things and singing about your experiences in real-time. You can't get to the clouds just by sitting and thinking about them. You must fly towards them! In the song, this is accomplished in a presto tempo and five-eighth meter, which together sound like a dance and at the same time stun as they swirl like a circling tornado. Accompanying light strings and colorful wind instruments support the voice that dances in full scale, delighted with the help of the trumpet at the climax releasing energy like lightning.
"AMONG ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS" is musically interpreted as a kind of meditation inspired by the afternoon in the park. It provokes similar feelings usually experienced when the circle of life is complete, and one spends his childhood and his autumnal stage of life close to nature ("the sun plays with shadow/ in the grass"). In the song, the singer watches kids spending their childhoods in the park ("children hid themselves in stillness"). And the sky is full of light as it should be in the hour of passing. The chanting melody is accompanied only by string instruments, bringing an atmosphere of enjoyment and calmness.
