Description
Suite of Imaginary Dances from Fictional Places
In a nutshell, these are dances that don't exist from places that don't exist. Or do they? Each imaginary dance comes with a brief description of the fictional place it is from, which may be recited by the performer or put in the program notes. I also encourage the performers to incorporate choreography, be it trying to emulate the dance in some way at some part while playing or simple adding some movement that resembles a part of the fictional dance. However, the music does stand for itself and can be performed without text or movement.
5. Uglisian “Prska”
“Prskas” are slow dances and songs about washing dishes danced and sung by men only. Washing dishes is regarded a holy ceremony in Uglia, where dish-soap, depending on its quality, can rise in price up to the weight equivalent of 24 karat gold.
The washing up is always done by men and by hand, washing machines being considered blasphemous. The washing up ceremony itself can take up to seven hours. Each plate has to be wiped three times, thrown in the air and then sung to in the most lamenting ways.
This “Prska” goes by the beautiful name of “Krkdan Imnit Kokobatz il Fitkin Bazit kshomatz”, or “Your Plate is clean and smells of Soup no more.”
