Description
Traveling West is a setting of four Nebraska Poets, Susan Strayer Deal, Marjorie Saiser, Hilda Raz,
and Kathleene West. Introducing the major/minor third relationship heard prominently throughout
the work, the opening instrumental Overture leads directly to Susan Strayer Deal’s Traveling West,
Deal’s poem is an evocation of the colors projected on the vast dome of the prairie sky. The second
song, Riding the Ghost of All Fierce White Horses, is according to the poet Marjorie Saiser, an
expression of flying and freedom. The setting is a nonstop, breathless ride, spurred on by piccolo swirls.
Hilda Raz’s introspective Sarah’s Wing, is the one poem not directly connected to the Nebraska
landscape. Accompanied by flute alone, the vocal line’s recitative contains the most melismatic passages
in the piece. This leads directly to Sarah’s Waltz, a brief , wistful instrumental commentary. Kathleene
West’s By Water Divined , the longest poem, proceeds through several sections before reaching the
culminating ...”and she sings, her voice a counterpoint...”.
Traveling West was commissioned and premiered by the Broyhill Ensemble in 1991 and was
recorded by the North/South Consonance Ensemble (N/S R 1036) Margaret O 'Connell, mezzo-soprano,
Max Lifchitz, conductor..
