Description
Brass Quintet is a virtuoso work for standard brass quintet lasting approximately 21 minutes. It consists of four movements performed without pause. Movement I (quarter = 60) is soft, introductory, and muted with straight mutes. It leads to Movement II (quarter = 108) which is characterized by a grid of 16th note rhythmic patterns. It is unmuted, loud, and grows to a frenzy. Movement III (quarter = 72) is an extended, calm, and predominately contrapuntal movement somewhat reminiscent of music of the Renaissance. It is marked Tranquillo and calls for several contrasting types of mutes help to differentiate the voices. Movement IV (quarter = 140) is primarily fast, full of color, and vibrant. It explores an implied tonal center where the pitch “concert G above middle C” becomes common tone throughout a changing backdrop of evolving harmonies. A fast-repeating motive comprised of four 16th notes is heard throughout. Trumpet one – utilizing the plunger mute – comments and interacts with the ensemble as if it were “talking.” The movement builds, resolves, and eventually winds down – returning to the opening sororities, motives, and harmony. The work was completed on May 30th, 2017.
