Description
Liminality (a word coming from the Latin limes, "limit" or "border") means not being in one place or another, be it physical or mental. The idea of liminality was first coined in the early twentieth century by anthropologist Arnold van Gennep and later taken up by Victor Turner. It was first applied to the of ambiguity or confusion that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when partakers no longer hold their pre-ritual state or condition but have not yet started the transmutation to the status they will hold when the rite is over. Thus the concept has to do with being on a threshold, between one thing that is no longer here and another that is yet to come.
Liminalis explores this idea of existence in the threshold, of ambiguity and disorientation. Music is here extremely floating and has an indistinct shape. At some point it gradually becomes more concrete but then turns back to the initial unsettled atmosphere. This dialogue between ambiguity and materialness is the main driving force of this composition.
