Description
his work is specifically designed for a spacially separated ensemble of opposing
wind and string ensembles with the horn playing an independant intermediate role.
The piece consists of nine sections in the form of a modified palindrome with internal
nested retrogrades. The palindroms are not exact but repeat retrograde versions of other
parameters besides pitch, such as rhythm. The first and last parts feature the full
ensemble in antiphonal exchanges. Sections 2 and 8 are built around klangfarben pentads
stratified in fixed registers. Parts 3 and 7 are dueling duos.The fourth and sixth
sections, the heart of the piece, features alternating ensembles playing canonic passages
in different non-syncronized tempi.This is interrupted by a horn solo in section leading
to the reverse reprise. Throughout the piece the G#4 serves as a guide tone connecting
the movements.
