Description
"BEN LUNN puts his beloved birthplace Sunderland on the musical map with HISTORY NEEDS… - a new left-hand piano concerto composed in close collaboration with fellow disabled artist Nicholas McCarthy. The brilliance and virtuosity of the score make it an important addition to the piano repertoire, bringing new perspectives to the fore." - Linton Stephens, BBC Radio 3
"Sometimes decades pass and nothing happens, then there are times when decades pass in a fortnight. Sometimes history needs a push" Lenin
The role of a soloist in a concerto setting is a curious one, and has had numerous renditions - be it the elaboration in Bach's Brandenburg Concerti or the non-virtuosic character of Little Harold in Berlioz' Harold in Italy. In this work, I wanted to draw upon the quote by Lenin which ultimately describes the role of dialectics and how an individual or group can push this natural phenomena.
Commissioned by Nicholas McCarthy, the piano takes this role where we are presented by a circumstance, which becomes destablised, then through the antagonism resolves into a new circumstance. Meaning the form is constantly evolving. This also means the result is not necessarily a resolution, and the soloist is not necessarily heroic, but is the force with which the contradictory forces are reconciled.
