Work introduction
These "Psalms without words" for piano entitled ... neither slumber nor sleep originated as vocal and choral settings commissioned by SOLI DEO GLORIA (Chicago). Psalms 42 and 121 are arrangements for solo piano of songs written for bass Bertrand Grunenwald and first performed at the Collège des Bernardins in Paris on October 24, 2012. Psalm 96 is based on motifs from a choral/orchestral work written in memory of musicologist Elsbeth Shannon, premièred in Grand Rapids, Michigan in May 2011 under the direction of John Nelson. Elsbeth's long-standing interest in Congolese hymnody served as an impulse for Psalm 96's modal/pentatonic idiom and jazz-oriented texture (in tribute to the pianism of McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock).
