The
27-year-old composer wrote his third symphony for Willem Mengelberg, the
Concertgebouw Orkest’s conductor, on the occasion of his 40th jubilee. It is
among his most significant works; immediately after its premiere performance in
1935 it was performed with great success in many European countries. The Berliner Tageblatt wrote of the first
performance: “The premiere of Henk
Badings’ Symphony No. 3 was one of the festival’s greatest surprises:
before us stands a musician in the finest sense of the word … and a master of
form, technique and orchestration.”
