Work introduction
Afric(a)more(s)ampler was premiered by Amores Grup de Percussió the 22-9-2024 in the Palau de les Arts, Festival Ensems, València (Spain).
PROGRAM NOTE: Afric(a)more(s)ampler is a work for three percussionists and electronics. The title itself gives us many clues about this composition. As we can read first, Africa is a source of inspiration for the music created. The second term of the title refers to the fact that the work has been written expressly for Amores Grup de Percussió, taking certain ideas that characterize some of their minimalist and post-minimalist projects. Finally, "sampler" indicates the electronic aspect of the composition and the use of musical fragments recorded in black Africa. In addition, the title can also be read as "afric more ampler" (eliminating the parentheses). In the context of this work, this would mean an intercultural, diverse reality connected to globalization, the post-colonial and the digital era; not a primitive, closed and exotic Africa (that of the colonial past or romantic idealizations). "Afric(a)more(s)ampler" has received a grant from the Institut Valencià de Cultura in the category of Composition of newly created musical works linked to their premiere.
