Work introduction
While Rihm was composing Aria/Ariadne, he was already thinking of writing an opera on the Dionysus theme (which he eventually did in 2009/2010). Aria/Ariadne is one of his many confrontations with Nietzsche; it is a setting of Ariadne’s Lament from the Dionysus Dithyrambs. Rihm’s subtitle Szenarie could be a hapax legomenon; even when he was composing the aria, he was already thinking of a staged version; and that became reality in 2009, when it was performed in Basle as part of the operatic presentation Drei Frauen, together with the Penthesilea Monologue and Das Gehege.
