Work introduction
David Hockney created a series of fifty-one iPad drawings between January and June 2011, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in Twenty Eleven (2011).
Staring in 2018, I began writing a cycle of short works based on my impressions of each drawing. In stylistic contrast to most of these works, which were written for viola ensemble, wind ensemble, string orchestra - among other combinations - I wrote this for Workshop Jazz Collective to perform at the Fruitworks performing arts venue in Canterbury. It was at this performance that I was asked to write an expanded version for big band.
Just as David Hockney's cycle depicts impressions of the same area over a period of change, my composition for jazz collective - Arrival of Spring - covers the cycle more broadly as it depicts a cold start that gradually warms up and increases energy.
