Work introduction
Composed in 2021, Autumn Song is based on the poem by Dante G Rossetti. The poem itself is a three stanza poem & is divided into sets of five lines , which is commonly known as quintains. The verses form a structured and consistent rhyming pattern of aabba ccaac aabba. The idea by Rossetti to use this rhyme scheme is to help its reader to get used to the repetition and thus be able to relate the verses from the first to the last.
As for the description of the poem, it describes the pains experienced by nature & how these pains are translated to humankind. In the first stanza, it talks about the days of autumn, particularly those which are edging on towards winter which is the hardest to live through. They are marked by an inescapable decay that makes its way through every living thing.
In the second stanza, emotions & mentality are involved towards the changing season.
In the third stanza, death is described as being preferable to the long decay of autumn. By the time the pain sets in, one will be ready to face death. It will be the more “comely” option between the two.
