Work introduction
Jean-Pierre Vial composed this Ballade in 2011.
The French words Ballade (a dance) and Balade (a walk) sound identically.
La Clarée is a river in a valley near Névache, France, where locals enjoy trekking.
Jean-Pierre Vial also composed two shorter variants of the full ballade: one, in major tone, is named Ballade de la Haute Vallée de la Clarée (referring to the up-stream valley), and the other, in minor tone, is named Ballade de la Basse Vallée de la Clarée (referring to the down-stream valley). Both are published by Universal Edition.
What is necessary to perform this work?
The harper or harpist can choose to play this piece on either a lever harp or a pedal harp.
To play the ballade on a lever harp, the instrument must encompass four (diatonic) octaves, from C2 through C6 (International Pitch Notation – IPN). D6 is a plus, but it remains optional.
