This music inspired by Chicago literature is intended as a portfolio from which, in addition
to the complete set, selections may be chosen for performance.
Nelson Algren's City on the Make, portrays the cliches of hustlers, gangsters and corrupt
politicians. Carl Sandburg's haiku-like poem Fog was published in 1916. The House on
Mango Street depicts Cisneros growing up in Chicago's Hispanic district.
Sister Carrie is a work of pivotal importance in American literature, and it became a model f
or subsequent American writers of realism. The Face of Time is the last volume of James T.
Farrell's multi-generational novel. The Mucker is a realistic novel by Chicago native Edgar
Rice Burroughs, famous author of Tarzan of the Apes. Ray Bradbury is best known for his
fantasy and science fiction stories. Dandelion Wine is a rumination on his childhood, growing
