Work introduction
Jean-Pierre Vial initially composed this “chorale,” as a homage to Johann Sebastian Bach, for a “nyckelharpa” ensemble (ancient string instruments) who premiered it in the Cathedral of Bertinoro, Italy, in August 2013.
The video below is a recording of the premiere.
The current version, for string ensemble, is more accessible to modern chamber orchestras.
The chorale name directly derives from the name of Bach's last work, “Vor deinen Thron, tret ich hiermit” (before Thy throne I now appear), a chorale now cataloged as BWV 668 that, reportedly, Bach had dictated to Johann Christoph Altnikol, his son-in-law, from his deathbed.
