'Cinc cànons' for piano four-hands is a set of pieces based on the technique of
rhythmic tiling canons. This is a counterpoint technique derived from the classic
technique of successive entries of the same melody to multiple voices but with
the particularity that once all the voices of the canon are playing at the same
time, none of them overlaps with the other other without leaving any pulse
("hole") free.
Each of the five canons is inspired by a different composer:
Cànon I - de menys en menys cromàtic...
(d'après György Ligeti)
Cànon II - tònica, subdominant, dominant
(d'après Manel Oltra)
Cànon III - sense alteracions
(d'après Claude Debussy)
Cànon IV - vuit harmònics
(d'après James Tenney)
Cànon V - només amb sis notes
(d'après Steve Reich)
