Work introduction
Paying homage to Joseph Conrad's renown short novel The Duel, D’Hubert et Feraud aims to portray the tense, yet poetic relationship between the novel's characters, two cavalry officers that engage in a life-long duel.
The composition makes use of both contemporary forms and romantic gestures, which seem to transport the listener to the novel's setting of the Napoleonic Wars. The piece articulates through a cyclical harmonic structure that elegantly shifts through chromaticisms and seemingly diatonic progressions, while elaborating highly expressive musical gestures and flourishes that recall a graceful and melodramatic past.
Originally composed in 2009, D’Hubert et Feraud has been performed at Spoleto's Festival of the Two Worlds, London's Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and numerous other prestigious venues.
