Schönberg: Das Buch der hängenden Gärten - op. 15Orchestration: für mittlere Stimme und großes Ensemble (Kammerorchester)
Type: Dirigierpartitur
Schönberg composed The Book of the Hanging Gardens shortly before his Erwartung Op. 17 (1909). A setting of 15 poems by Symbolist author Stefan George, it is a highly expressionistic work, in which emotions constantly seem to be near to bursting their bonds, as the agogics in the score evince; ritardandi are followed by “somewhat urgently” and then “calming again,” crescendi and decrescendi alternate, while “agitated expression” is required of the singer.
