On the occasion of his 80th birthday on 29 June 2021, Wolfgang Lichtenstein wished for a song, 'just a two-liner'. The composer adapted a Chinese poem by Rai San'yo (1780-1832) and chose it as the model for his canon.
The term donatialie certainly requires explanation: on special holidays, it is not only permissible but also morally appropriate to manifest one's affection and appreciation with a donatialie. A donatialie is a benefit in kind, which may also be of monetary value, but which is not effective for tax purposes. If the gift is of a musical nature, it is usually referred to disparagingly as an occasional composition. The author of the pieces presented here has written a series of such chamber music, which is made visible and generally accessible here as a collection.
