Work introduction
This trio was written as a wedding present for Jean Pierre Thoma, with
the two short movements serving as processional and recessional. Much
of the pitch material is derived from the opening intervals, G, F, and Ab.
The second half begins with measure 4 of the opening but goes in a much
different, more humerous direction..
The wedding took place outdoors, and during the recessional, a swarm of
dragonflies attacked the ensemble, one of which became lodged in the lower
keys of the bassoon, needless to say, compromising the rest of the performance.
The trio consisted of the composer on flute, Leo Dixon, clarinet , and Pierre
LaPlante, bassoon.
The duration of the work is around 3 minutes.
