Work introduction
Writing duets and trios is of special interest to me. I have always had a soft spot for writing small chamber works in general. It is of particular interest to me to write chamber pieces in which the musical interest is shared equally between the specified instruments. Counterpoint or independence of line is inherently a fixed attachment or unit in the general continuity of the music shared between the respective instruments. In this case the equitableness between the Harp and the Violin. What a lovely combination of timbres. And timbre is always a motivating factor in my orchestral decision making.
The title “Duo” and “Duet” were often favored by publishers during the Romantic period. Some composers have preferred “Duet” for vocal pieces and some “Duo” for instrumental pieces. Either duo or duet makes no difference to me they both infer unanimity and rapport. A close association and understanding of a fellow feeling. Hopefully a nice feeling. Vocal and instrumental duos or duets have been popular since the 15th century. And thankfully duos and duets are still popular today. In fact, during the renaissance age a duo and a duet sometimes inferred a composition for a single performer. My attitude has always been the more instruments the merrier but I make an acceptation for duos, duets and trios.
