Work introduction
The title of this three-movement composition is Fi, because the tone set is given by the Fibonacci sequence.
The numbers can be translated into intervalsteps: 0=perfect firth, 1=minor second, 2=major second, 3=minor third etc. In this system we measure each tone to the previous one. In case of a number that is greater than 12 we work with the remainder, e.g. 13=minor second (13-12=1), 21=major sixth (21-12=9) and so on. Since the remainders of the Fibonacci-numbers, after dividing them by 12, repeat in a 24-cycle (in the Pisano period of 12), we get a 24 tone row that is to be heard completely in the first movement on the clarinet and in the second movement on the piano. The numbers of the Fibonacci sequence increase fast. The digits of these huge numbers can be translated to notes, these notes can construct clusters and chords. In the piano-part of the first movement the 25th-48th members, in the clarinet-part of the second movement the 49th-72nd members and divided on the two instruments in the third movement the 73rd-96th members are represented as chords. We had larger freedom creating the rhythmics of the piece, however, the rhythms divided with 1, 2, 3 or 5 were preferable, since these numbers are represented in the Fibonacci sequence.
The piece won the 2nd prize at the 5th Edison Denisov Young Composers’ Competition in Tomsk, Russia, 2019.
