Work introduction
Not much is known about Beethoven’s love life. What we do know is that he wrote a series of love letters to an unknown woman, who is now known as ‘The Immortal Beloved’. “My angel, my all, my own, own self”, is how Ludwig begins writing his outpouring of emotions, and our guess is that this love was most likely unrequited. This song-a soul ballad with classical vocal phrases which defies categorisation-is set to the words of Beethoven’s deeply romantic letter, and it is the love ballad that Beethoven may have even written himself had he been born in this century.
