Work introduction
This one-act, choreographic comedy was written in 1924 for Rolf de Maré’s Ballets Suédois in Paris; Casella made a 20-minute orchestra suite from it that same year. It consists of eight movements, two of them lasting almost five minutes each, while two others are only 30 seconds long; the other movements are rousing, witty and surprising in their effects.
Casella infuses the score with familiar Sicilian folk-tunes, such as Chiòvu and La storia della fanciulla rapita dai pirati, including an (optional) yearning tenor solo in Sicilian dialect.
