Work introduction
The "Lithuanian Folksongs" were written at the request of the "Vilnius Chamber Orchestra" and its conductor Vytauts Virzonis after an extensive tour of Lithuania on my "Ecco il Violino" for solo violin and string orchestra with the soloist Katharina Schamböck.
Before I began composing, I studied Lithuanian folk music in detail, which is played mainly on the casteless neck zither kankles, which is widespread in the Baltic States, as well as on the clarinet-like birbine.
The five-stringed "kankl?s" are the most common, with the shortest and the longest string tuned to a fifth interval.
Legends and traditions report that Lithuanian "vaidilos" or bards used to sing epic heroic deeds to the accompaniment of solo or choral "kankl?s", and that the instrument was also played during sacrifices, sacred rituals and for protection against evil spirits and death.
In the "Lithuanian Folksongs" I have arranged melodies from Lithuanian heroic epics in 5 short, contrasting movements for string orchestra.
5 movements:
1 Daina Apie Senove
2 Ant Kalno Malunelis
3 Kankles Ziditojas
4 Kankliu Rauda
5 Skamba Kankles
