Work introduction
Jean-Pierre Vial composed this funeral march, initially for tuba and organ, in 1968. As an option, you can choose to assign the tuba part to a trombone.
After a grave introduction in C minor, repeated at the conclusion, the central part of the piece develops a melody which, while remaining tonal, presents the twelve notes of the chromatic scale. The melody is accompanied by an Alberti-type bass which forms a counterpoint close to bitonality.
After a tuba (or trombone) solo, the piece ends with a repeat of the grave introduction in C minor.
What is necessary to perform this work?
- for detailed organ requirements, refer to the Additional Materials below
- the full score (supplied in A3 format, 297 x 420 mm or 11.7 x 16.5 inches) and the organ part (supplied in A4 format, 210 x 297 mm or 8.3 x 11.7 inches) contain identical information, so organists can order either score according to the size they prefer
- in this piece, initially designed for tuba and organ, you can substitute a trombone for the tuba
- tubists can ad libitum consider playing their part octava bassa
