Work introduction
An antiphon is almost by definition a chant linked with a psalm but Marion antiphons became a creative activity that grew to be independent of chant and psalmody. Marion antiphons are songs of venerational and devotional contexts meant for Mary the mother of Jesus. They were sung by Gregorian and Franciscan monks. From the 13th century to the present Marion antiphons have been sung at the end of compline service the last hour of the liturgical day. Of all the large scale Marion antiphons there have been four which have become the most consequential: Alma Redemptoris Mater; Ave Regina Caelorum; Regina Caeli and Salve Regina. Marion antiphons were a popular practice, well received from the time of the middle ages to the present.
In the paradigm of sacred music Marion antiphons were not just loving obligations, commitments and responsibilities for a liturgical service. They were also seen as a significant viable art form a paradigm of artistic expression. A composer doesn’t need to be a Roman catholic enthusiast to participate in the creative activity associated with this genre. A composer just needs to make the music the setting of the texts a sincerely immersive experience full of love and kindness. And artistry.
