Work introduction
Material Rhythms is a percussion quartet in four movements. The first three movements use a different material of indefinite pitch: I. Wood, II. Metal, III. Skin. And, in movement IV. Mix, a combination of all three.
The simplicity of the notation belies multiple layers of rhythms informed by Afro-Cuban montuño and clave. If ensembles opt to build their own instruments, each performance can have a unique sound. The piece is highly portable depending on the design of the instruments.
First Performance: Reinhardt University, Waleska, Georgia, November 10, 2015
