Work introduction
Motivated by the Lucerne
Symphony Orchestra for a Brahms/Rihm cycle, Nähe fern 3 was composed
to be played with Brahms’ Symphony No. 3;
it is also the third movement of Rihm’s
Nähe fern-symphony.
As with the other pieces in
his cycle, Rihm wrote his own music which yet nears that of faraway Brahms. The
composition is in constant flux; quick, energetic sections alternate with slow,
lyrical ones. Solemn, majestic climaxes precede melodies recalled from the
past; they are tender, longing, as if they were conjuring up a lost world.
