Work introduction
Like the three previous
movements of Rihm’s Nähe fern-Symphony (each of which can be
paired with the Brahms symphonies), this conclusive piece deals with
reminiscence. The main theme from the first movement of Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 appears in the
background, as if veiled, although Rihm’s music does conjure up the spirit of
Brahms, his world and much that has happened in music since then – up to Rihm’s
own. There are frictions in the harmony not to be found in Brahms; yet the
longing, the tenderness, the dark colours of his late Romanticism are all
there, filtered through Rihm’s creative personality.
