Work introduction
The arrangement was commissioned by the 1998 Salzburg Easter Festival for a series of performances at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. On 4 April 1998, Tobias Moretti was the narrator; members of the Mozarteum Orchestra played the music. The restriction to an 11-member soloist ensemble was dictated by the theatre’s spatial conditions; the woodwinds correspond to the original setting. The relatively large brass group was replaced by a piano, the two percussionists (including the three timpani) were reduced to one (with two timpani) and the string group became soloistic, thus restoring the balance of the overall sound.
The advantages of this arrangement lie above all in its practicability and greater ease of production even for small ensembles, to make a wonderful work of musical history accessible in live performance to a broader audience.
