Work introduction
The four movements of this work for flute, cello, and bass are: Allegro a la Lydian, Cantabile, Phrygian Scherzo, Something like a Bourree. The duration is about 7 minutes. Modal harmony is employed in movements one and three as is seen by the titles of the movements. The Cantabile second movement is a takeoff from one of the movements of the composer's Sonata for Oboe and Organ, with irregular meters and each of the three instruments sharing in the conversation in bits and pieces. The final Bourree movement finishes off this short work with a sprightly, joyous theme in a rondo form.
