Work introduction
Jean-Pierre Vial composed these quite classical prelude and fugue on themes he chose among a few suggested themes.
Whereas the prelude and the fugue are written in C minor, both conclude on a C major chord.
The prelude exposes and develops its theme, first in duple time, then in triple time.
Although its theme is rather unusual, the fugue includes all components of a classical fugue (i.e., subject, counterpoint, developments, stretto, coda, etc.).
Both the prelude and the fugue follow a crescendo scheme.
