Work introduction
Part of the name is misleading; Berio composed 11 variations on Boccherini’s theme, which the latter fashioned into four different instrumental combinations after the huge success of his original work for string quintet. But Boccherini (1743-1805) did live in Madrid, hence the “nocturnal Madrid” in the title. The wealth of its melodies, its lightheartedness, its lively tempo and its imaginative scoring ensure that this encounter between two Italian composers across the centuries will greatly entertain audiences.
